Asmet to Attend UK Commission for Employment and Skills Event

Asmet is pleased be participating in a UK Commission for Employment and Skills Event on Thursday 9th February at the Cutlers' Hall, Sheffield, UK.

The event will be hosted by Charlie Mayfield, Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership and Chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, and John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning.

This event will provide Commissioners and the Minister with an opportunity to meet with leading business people in the region to better understand the local challenges employers are facing.

Andrew Parker of Asmet explained "Asmet play an active role in our industry through various bodies such as the Institute of Cast Metal Engineers (ICME), the Cast Metals Federation, NAMTEC and the Sheffield City Region Manufacturing Forum.   What is very clear is that as the older generation moves towards retirement, the UK cast metals sector faces a skills shortage that we must take action on now to give young people the skills and career path to take our industry forward".

The event coincides with the launch of the Government's £250 million Employer Ownership Pilot which provides employers with the chance to lead and start a transformation of the current skills system. The Pilot gives employers the space to step up and develop innovative and ambitious proposals to provide the skills to meet their business needs.

There will also be a focus on some of the exciting collaborative skills work that is already taking place in the region. Professor Keith Ridgway, Executive Dean of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute will be explaining how the University of Sheffield has worked in partnership with Boeing and other employers to create a world-class centre for machining and materials research for aerospace and other high-value manufacturing.
