Australian Government Outlines Plans for Carbon Tax

The Australian government is currently considering a carbon tax on mining operations that will affect raw materials such as chromite, coal, iron oxide, zircon as well as ferro alloys such as Ferro Chrome and Ferro Manganese.

Australia contributes just 1.5 per cent of global carbon emissions but is one of the world's highest polluters per capita. With this background, politicians aim to cut carbon emissions by five per cent on 2000 levels by 2020, a major challange for Australia's carbon-intensive economy.

The proposal is that commencing July 2012, approximately 400 of the country's highest polluters will pay $23 per ton of carbon emissions, followed by a new carbon trading scheme in 2015.
