EAL has launched a new Level 3 Diploma in Casting Technology which has been developed in partnership with the Institute of Cast Metal Engineers (ICME) to meet the needs of those working in casting technology businesses. Covering a wide range of topics including sand moulding, core making, patternmaking, investment casting, die casting, post cast operations and metallurgical testing the qualification is currently the only one of its type available in the UK.
The qualification is also included in the advanced apprenticeship frameworks for the industry, (developed by Sector Skills Council, SEMTA) so that young recruits can now study foundry, moulding or patternmaking specific units rather than general engineering units to enable them to become the foundry engineers and technicians of the future. On completion of their apprenticeship, individuals will be able to register as a professional technician, boosting their job prospects and status in the industry.
It is clear that as an older generation of skilled and experienced workers nears retirement, the UK cast metals industry requires an influx of young people and the diploma is another step in providing a formal education framework for casting technology. ICME will also be working with other providers , such as Dudley college, and the support of the industry to ensure that qualifications are delivered around the UK using a combination of taught classes, workshops and distance learning .
Furthermore, Bradford College's new Foundation Degree in Casting Technology, which is at levels 4 and 5, should see it's first graduates this year and is looking to looking to develop a Bachelors Degree for individuals from the Foundation Degree to progress to, and is also considering a number of other Foundation Degrees such as heat treatment that will be of interest to specialist sectors of the castings industry.
At the recent ICME event to launch the new Diploma over 40 foundries attended the day, demonstrating that businesses are keen to develop their young engineers and technicians and invest long term in a bright future for the UK cast metals sector.
