Low Water Levels Impact Thyssenkrupp's Rhine Barge Shipments of Iron Ore

Da Vinci could not have more aptly said that water is the driving force of all nature. The driest November in 10 years has caused extremely low water levels in Germany's river and canal systems. Water levels on the Rhine have fallen to less than a metre in places and ship owners are refusing to sail on the German stretch of the Danube for safety reasons.

At the moment, Thyssenkrupp has been able to meet iron ore demand from its Duisburg steelworks by part loading a higher number of barges from Rotterdam, which has forced up shipping costs accordingly. However, if water levels fall below the draught required by its barges it will have no choice but to halt shipments.

Another German steelmaker, Salzgitter remains unaffected by this problem as it transports all its iron ore from Hamburg.
