Following an investment of $6.5 million to increase aerospace steel production by 30%, Tata Steel is due to start commissioning two furnaces for aerospace steel production at its Stocksbridge steelworks in Sheffield, UK by the end of 2011.
The two vacuum arc remelting furnaces and specialist testing equipment are expected to be in full production by early 2012.
"We are now entering the testing phase of this major investment programme, and will begin trials later this year," Andre Douglass, engineering director for Tata Steel's speciality business, said in the statement.
"This process will ensure the new equipment is capable of producing the technically demanding, safety critical steels our aerospace customers require," he added.
Vacuum arc remelting furnaces enable producers to improve the chemical and mechanical properties of steel to meet the high casting standards required for demanding environments such as offshore oil and gas and aerospace.
